Celebrating Matthew’s 6-Month Milestone

Congratulations to Matthew on reaching his 6-month employment milestone!

Matthew*, 39, joined Global Skills Disability Employment Services in 2023. Living with a lower limb disability that brought additional health challenges, and a speech impairment, he was eager to work and sought support to identify roles that matched his skills and abilities.

With support from his Employment Consultant, Christine, Matthew worked on recognising his strengths and interests, exploring roles that would be a good fit for him. He decided that a driving role would be ideal, as it was something he enjoyed and would help him manage his condition better than standing for long periods. Christine helped Matthew update his resume, enhance his job search skills and prepare for interviews. She also provided disability disclosure training, boosting his confidence in discussing his needs with employers and encouraged him to reach out to friends and family to uncover potential job opportunities.

With Christine’s support, Matthew applied for jobs and he connected with his network. Soon Matthew secured work as a general hand and later moved into a delivery driver role thanks to a tip from a friend. Now, more than a year later, he has remained employed and wanted to share his appreciation for the support he received from Global Skills. He said, “Christine has helped me with everything. She gave me job search tips, practiced interviews with me and regularly checks in. She’s always there for me, whether it’s with petrol, work clothes or just support when I need it. Global Skills has given me confidence and everything I need for my job and I love my job. Getting out of the house and being in the community every day has been really good for me.”

Congratulations, Matthew, from all of us at Global Skills and thank you for sharing your story.
