aged care worker helping an older woman out of a wheelchair and into a car

Linda's Story

Linda, 63, joined Global Skills Disability Employment Services in May 2023. Dealing with several medical conditions resulting from Stage 3 melanoma, she lacked confidence in securing work.

When Linda was connected with Global Skills St Marys Employment Consultant Johanna, she expressed an interest in aged care and support work, drawing from past experience caring for a family member. She also expressed the need for support in her job search.

Johanna helped Linda to update her resume and worked closely with her to build her job search, application and interview skills. Linda successfully completed her interview onsite at our St Marys office and was further supported to gain the required First Aid Certificate. She began work in January 2024 as a Home Support Worker. Linda’s role includes helping clients with disability with housework, getting to appointments, shopping and whatever else is required. Johanna has continued to offer post placement support including regular phone and face-to-face appointments, fuel vouchers and assistance to navigate the app used to manage her employee details. Linda will soon reach her 6-month employment milestone.

Linda attributes her employment not only to providing structure and purpose but also to significantly improving her mental health. She is thrilled to make a difference daily and has affirmed her decision to pursue a long-term career in support work.

Congratulations on your ongoing employment Linda and thank you for sharing your story.
