“I love connecting with different types of people from all walks of life. My passion is getting to know who they are and what they can do.” Scott Morton is a Senior Employment Consultant in our Disability Employment Services (DES) program. He says his passion for working with people with disabilities came from spending his gap year in England.
When Scott finished school, he decided to spend a year working abroad before attending university. He chose to work at the Queen Alexandria College (QAC) in Birmingham, England. The QAC creates challenging learning opportunities for people with disabilities to realise their potential to work and to live independently. Scott says, “Working at QAC, opened my eyes to the different types of adaptive supports available to people with disabilities to enable them to work. My passion for working with people with disabilities stems from the year I spent there.”
When Scott returned to Sydney, he worked in the Home Care industry whilst completing a Bachelor Degree in Education (Habilitation). After graduating, Scott obtained full-time work in the disabilities field.
Some years later, in 2018, a Global Skills employee in his personal network, alerted him to a position vacant with us. Scott says, “I was intrigued with the Employment Consultant position, with both what I could offer and how I could continue to learn and grow within the disabilities field from this type of role.”
Scott works across our Penrith and St Marys offices and explains his role. “In DES you work with a lot of people from different walks of life. All require different support to move into employment. When job seekers are supported to build resilience and gain confidence in things they can do, things start opening up. My role is to support and mentor, to look at ways of adapting to different situations. It’s a partnership, working towards successful sustainable employment. We support our DES job seekers, and their employers, for at least twelve months from the start of their employment, adjusting support as needed.”
On working with Global Skills, Scott says, “Everyone is treated the same. Management are always checking in and are willing to help you grow. It’s a very supportive environment, one that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. I love where I work. I know I’ve got support. I can pick up the phone and talk to anyone, it’s an open-door policy.”
Scott is a much-valued member of the Global Skills team. He helps to support and empower our DES job seekers. He is also a keen photographer and videographer who uses his skills and abilities to help tell their stories. His passion and generosity in documenting some of our posted stories are greatly valued.
