International Day of People with Disability 2022

Today, 3 December, is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

The theme for 2022, Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development, the role of innovation in fuelling an equitable world, includes a focus on increasing accessibility and reducing inequalities in workplaces that are inclusive and interested in promoting diversity in the workplace.

Global Skills Disability Employment Services (DES) experience shows many employers are keen to hire people with disability but are not sure where to start or how best to support their new employee.

The Following testimonial from Greenleaf Early Learning Centre Director Smrity Paul, highlights how employers can be supported to include people with disability in their workplace: “I find Global Skills really helpful, especially Ven [Global Skills Regional Marketing Coordinator Ven Panicker]. He finds staff that are suitable for my vacant position every time. He does a great job. Ven also keeps in regular contact with me throughout the recruitment process. It’s very reassuring. If you are looking for staff, consider hiring people with disability. If you find the right person for the job and they have the right support, the rewards are endless.”

Reflecting on IDPwD 2022, Global Skills Director Rebecca Nicholls states, “Our organisation remains committed to create a more accessible, equitable and inclusive society and is proud that over 24% of our workforce has a disclosed disability, health condition or illness. We champion other employers to explore how they can create more opportunities for people with disability in their workplace”.
